“You do not need to be for the athletic Running – it is”

Smarter life #13: How Paul after work, motivated to Run

At the first Berlin-Marathon 45 years ago, 300 runners and runners arrived not even inside the target line. Last summer there were more than 44,000. For years, and the number is rising in national races in the whole of Germany.

“In the meantime, it is relatively normal to go for a run,” says Paul Schmidt-Hellinger, a physician and athlete. He has twice won the Barbados Marathon and holds the German record of more than 50 kilometers. Even as a child he started with the athletics, and he had the Talent. But that’s the point for Paul is not necessarily: “You do not need to be for the athletic Running – it is.”

Since the Couch is simply more relaxed than a round through the Park, it can be hard to motivate yourself – especially in the beginning. “A little competition is goal as a re-entry super,” recommends Paul. In particular, beginners should not overestimate their abilities, however. For the entry-level company runs particularly well, which are generally three to eight kilometers long. “And so five kilometers, which can actually create everyone.”

From the popular half-marathon, Paul advises, on the other hand, at least in the first few months of training: “Ten kilometers as the target is much more useful, because then also for the first time, fundamentally, the speed and the General ability to run.”

How should you start the Training then? What equipment is useful? And what is the motivation tricks Paul help to get up to after work for a run round?

The answers are there in the new episode of the podcast “Smarter life”.
