What Happened When This Guy Tried to Learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Just 30 Days

Following his video in which he spent 30 days practicing his Muay Thai skills, YouTuber Laurie Shaw is curious to learn more about different martial arts and flex his muscles in a new discipline. In his most recent video, he throws himself into an intensive month of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training to see how accomplished he can become in just 30 days.

“With hard work and the right amount of training, I think you’ll definitely notice some improvement,” says instructor and former competitor Karl.

Shaw goes up against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu medalist Michelle and blue belt Ryan on Day 1 of the challenge, and then again on Day 30, in order to establish how much progress he has been able to make. “I was pretty much thinking, while I was getting rolled around on the mat, to just not let them submit me,” says Shaw. “And that didn’t go too well.”

Following those initial matches, in which Shaw submits to both Ryan and Michelle in each round, he commits to training almost every day for the duration of the next month. “There’s so much to learn, and so many different phrases and terms and concepts that I’d never heard before, but I also had this constant sense that I was in good hands, so I kept going, 5 to 6 sessions a week,” he says. “Sometimes I would go twice a day, just trying to learn and reiterate the basics and the fundamentals in my head. Turning up, tying my belt, jumping on the mat, and pretty much giving it all I had, over and over and over again.”

When the end of the 30 days comes, Shaw once again faces off against Ryan and Michelle to test his mettle—and soon finds that the consistency in his training has yielded benefits.

“I think the progression is pretty obvious,” says Karl. “You actually had purpose this time, you knew where you wanted to go, you were going for proper grips, you weren’t just grabbing whatever.”
