Well, if that was a test for London Marathon I think I got a D-minus. Though possibly some marks for effort. Yesterday I ran the Wokingham half marathon – or more accurately, ran about 1.75 miles of it. Tightness in my calf – which annoyingly has been absolutely fine for the last few weeks – suddenly turned into cramp, with the threat of something worse. When you realise you are actually attempting to run sideways in order to stretch it a bit, things are not going well.
Obviously at this point I stopped, and probably should have limped back to the start. But I’ve never DNF-ed in a race and I’m nothing if not stubborn, so after stretching a bit, I jogged the rest (though only after I felt it was coping well enough not to be doing myself a proper injury – I’m not that stubborn). So, massages galore and calf stretches on every step for me, and fingers firmly crossed that it’s not going to completely scupper my marathon plans.
Enough of my woes, though. How was the weekend for you? Lots of half marathons and other races – Hampton Court half looked fun and a great result for my team, with two Windmilers on the podium (well done Matt and Meriel!). As always, share your woes, triumphs, and, err, advice on super-tight calf muscles below the line. Anyone recommend a calf compression sleeve thingy?
