As unbelievable as it sounds, Naomi Watts celebrated her 50th birthday over the weekend surrounded by her closest gal pals in Morocco.
In case you are questioning just how the star looks so great for her age (as in, decades younger), her insane fitness stamina might have something to do with it. In a September 21 Instagram post, Watts revealed that she starts her day with an insane amount of burpees — at least she tries to.
“Feeling good with @courtney_deri @theclass nothing like a hundred burpees to start your day!!” she wrote, adding the hashtags #ifailed #butfeltgoodanyway.
In case you are curious about what “class” Watts is referring to, it is a popular workout method courtesy of trainer Taryn Toomey, dubbed quite simply “The Class.” The cardio-meets-yoga class is popular with other celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston and Christy Turlington, and fans claim that it does more than strengthen your body, but also enlightens your mind.
But back to the burpees… The equipment-free move is awesome, as it works your entire body, revs metabolism and can be done anywhere in a short period of time. It basically takes a person (1) standing to (2) tucked to (3) plank to (4) push-up to (5) tucked to (6) jumping. (See exactly how to do a burpee here.)
Just how many burpees should you be able to do? According to a recent study from Virgin Active, people in their 20s should be able to perform 20 burpees in a row and those in their 50s, five without stopping — which means Watts is clearly kicking burpee-butt for her age.
Despite her fitness abilities, Watts recently told Harper’s Bazaar that she maintains a low-key approach. “I try to work out as often as I can, but I’m not fanatical about fitness,” she revealed. “My back carries most of my tension and if I’m stressed I can’t do high-impact exercise, so yoga and Pilates tend to work better for me.” She added that meditation and yoga also help her “balance the stress and slow down.”
As for her diet, she isn’t an extremist. “I try to eat healthily but I don’t deprive myself, if I want sweet things I’ll have it. I’m naturally drawn to greens and often whizz up a green juice for breakfast,” she said. “I’ll throw in kale, walnuts, yoghurt and pineapple into my Vitamix.”
Well, whatever you are doing Ms. Watts, it is totally working!
