Running blog: how was your weekend running?

Did you get out for a run this weekend? There were some cracking-sounding events taking place, from a scenic beach-to-beach fun run in St Andrews, Scotland, to some hardcore 24-hour races in Hertfordshire and Berkshire. The Isle of Skye must be a stunning setting for a half marathon – did anyone have a go at that on Saturday?

Then there were some wackier races, such as the annual 24-mile Man v Horse challenge in Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales. If you’re wondering, a horse won again, beating the fastest runner by 28 minutes.

I was in Winchester competing in the Tough Mudder adventure challenge with a couple of friends. It was a glorious day and the views over the South Downs were fantastic, but it was difficult to appreciate them while being frozen, electrocuted, burned and bruised. Actually it was great fun, and not quite as exhausting as I had expected. We finished in around three hours, which included a bit of queueing at obstacles (though to be honest, I was glad of the chance to get my breath back).

My favourite obstacle was Island Hopping, a Wipeout-style series of leaps on to floating platforms, and the worst was probably Electric Eel: crawling through mud with electric wires dangling down – largely thanks to the man who grabbed me every time he got electrocuted, giving me second-hand shocks. The ice bath (Arctic Enema) was pretty bracing, too. Still, a post-run pint has never tasted so good. Any other Tough Mudders out there?
