You may have the best of intentions to get fit and join a gym, but the thought of gym junkies watching you on the treadmill and judging what you’re wearing (like that oversized Disneyland t-shirt you wear to bed) fills you dread, you’re not alone. Gymtimidation is real! And it’s preventing too many gorgeous women from experiencing the joys (and health benefits) of exercise.
The good news is, gymtimidation is mostly in our heads so you really have nothing to fear. Here are our top six tips to beat it:
1. Introduce yourself
Chat to the gym instructors and let them know you’re new. Remember, these guys are there to support you; that’s why they’re there. So, if there’s a machine you want you to use, just ask them. They’ll help you with technique and can help create a routine for you. Plus, it’s awesome having a buddy at the gym.
2. Invest in some good active wear
When you feel good, you feel confident. And when you feel confident, you don’t care what other people think. We suggest buying some stylish and quality activewear that makes you feel amazing. It’s one of the best parts of working out – shopping for new sports bras and leggings!
3. Know that no one is looking at you
FACT! Seriously, people at the gym are focused on themselves and their goals. And if they do look at you, they’re probably jealous of your awesome technique or those great leggings. If you’re still nervous, bring a friend and you can train together.
4. Create and plan your own routine
Knowing what you want to do at the gym will help you focus (and stop you from worrying what others are thinking). Our KIC program includes a complete breakdown of every workout which means you can take us to the gym. Plus, you’ll look like a serious pro when you’re smashing one of our workouts.
5. Write down and focus on your goals
We all have to start somewhere. So, who cares if you can’t run fast on the treadmill or lift heavy weights? You’re there for you! Focus on your long-term goals and remember that each gym sesh is a step to reaching them.
6. Sign up to a class
If you’re not sure where to begin when you step foot into a gym, try a class. The instructor will tell you what you to do and will keep you motivated and supported throughout the workout. Not sure which class is for you? Try them all! From boxing to HIIT to dance to spin, you’ll never get bored.
Steph Claire Smith and Laura Henshaw are the founders of KICgirls.com. Their 28-day program is inspired by the girls’ love for boxing, running and strength training. And as the girls are also massive foodies, KIC’s food planner is one of the best going around. From tacos and pad Thai to smoothies and raw desserts, their menu will fuel you with energy and nutrition to help you take on the world.
