James Martin is a fixture of daytime television; his show Saturday Morning with James Martin airs every weekend and he is regularly seen knocking up a treat for Phil and Holly on ITV’s This Morning. James is on top form at the moment but he experienced a bout of ill health following his departure from Saturday Kitchen in 2016.
Speaking to the MailOnline, he revealed how his ill health led to “a few operations”.
The star’s admission about his health struggles came two years after he left the show.
James continued: “I wasn’t very well…I had a few operations. And I wasn’t too good.
“You just think, God, you’ve got one shot at life here.”
This is not the first time James raised concerns about his health.
In an interview with Event Magazine, the TV chef spoke of how personal tragedies have put his life into perspective.
“I lost three or four mates to heart attacks and cancer. You say, Woah! You spend your entire life at work, work, work, with no time for yourself and the people around you.
“So I made a decision to look at the way I lived my life.”

Striking a more positive note, the star has also been vocal about his weight loss.
General tips to improve your health
Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of maintaining good health, and can help you feel your best.
According to the NHS, this means eating a wide variety of foods in the right proportions, and consuming the right amount of food and drink to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.
“People with special dietary needs or a medical condition should ask their doctor or a registered dietitian for advice,” advises the health body.
The Eatwell Guide shows that to have a healthy, balanced diet, people should try to:
- Eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day
- Base meals on higher fibre starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice or pasta
- Have some dairy or dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks)
- Eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein
- Choose unsaturated oils and spreads, and eat them in small amounts
- Drink plenty of fluids (at least six to eight glasses a day).
According to the Eatwell Guide, if you’re having foods and drinks that are high in fat, salt and sugar, you should have these less often and in small amounts.
Try to choose a variety of different foods from the five main food groups to get a wide range of nutrients, it states.
The five main food groups are fruit and vegetables, starchy food, dairy, protein and fat.
Regular exercise can also bolster your health by managing your weight and reducing your risk of developing diseases.
What’s more, exercise can help prevent and treat mental health problems.
“Try to regularly do exercise that strengthens your bones and muscles,” explains Bupa.
“Any amount you do is better than none, but adults should aim to do strengthening activities at least two times a week.”
