Approximately one in three British adults has hypertension, according to Blood Pressure UK. This common condition can lead to serious health conditions including heart disease, organ failure and blindness. However by making some changes to your diet, you can cut your risk of developing high blood pressure, and bring the all-important blood pressure reading down.

Approximately five million people in England are living with undiagnosed hypertension, according to Blood Pressure UK.

Your blood pressure has a huge impact on your overall health, and if your blood pressure climbs into the danger zone, you are at increased risk of cardiac arrest or stroke.

In order to avoid the complications accompanying high blood pressure, you should eat a healthy diet: low in sodium and high in vegetables and natural whole foods.

This low-calorie, nutritious and delicious snack is perfect for anyone who has high blood pressure, or wants to prevent hypertension in the future.

Bananas are superheroes when it comes to protecting you from hypertension.

The yellow fruit is very high in potassium, an essential mineral for your body and one that has a crucial role in lowering blood pressure.

An average banana contains more than 400mg of potassium.

Potassium from your diet can help to remedy the effects of eating too much salt, and relax the walls of blood vessels.

Eating more potassium allows your body to remove more sodium through your urine.

However, this doesn’t mean you can eat heaps of salt and then snack on a banana to cancel it out.

The recommended daily limit of salt is six grams, which is just about a teaspoonful.

According to Action on Salt, the average Briton eats more than the daily limit at 8.4g of salt every day.

To avoid high blood pressure and the associated risks, including heart disease and stroke, you must tackle your salt intake first.

You can chomp on a banana as a snack, or try blending it with other fruits into a smoothie.

Bananas are delicious as a porridge topping, or sliced on toast with peanut butter and honey – if you’re feeling adventurous.

If you can’t remember when you last had your blood pressure checked, visit your GP or get a reading from your local pharmacy.

If you are overweight, a smoker, or have a family history of heart disease, you are considered ‘at risk’ for high blood pressure and should have it checked once a year.

The NHS said everyone over the age of 40 should have their blood pressure checked every five years, even if they feel healthy and have no risk factors.
