Watch Olympic Runner Nick Symmonds Take on the Beer Mile

Ah, the Beer Mile. It’s a runner’s worst nightmare, yet gloriously irresistible. And much more fun to watch than actually participate in.

In a recent YouTube video, former Beer Mile world record holder, professional runner and two-time Olympian Nick Symmonds takes on the challenge with his buddies. And they are downing Coors Banquet and burping up suds all the way.

For those who don’t know, the infamous Beer Mile challenges runners to run four laps, chugging a beer at the beginning of each one. Oh, and competitors can’t throw up. That’s an immediate DQ.

The competitors in this particular challenge, along with Symmonds, include a running enthusiast affectionately nicknamed Captain Tom, a day-drinking champ who simply cannot run, and a mysterious “frat boy” in a hot pink full-body Morphsuit. Needless to say, things get interesting.

“The alcohol doesn’t hit you,” Symmonds explains in the video. “We’re only running for somewhere between eight or ten minutes. You don’t have enough time for the alcohol to make you feel drunk. You just have a ton of adrenaline and a lot of cramping in your stomach.”

Which explains why Morphsuit man eventually has to expose his face to vomit nothing but suds.

Spoiler: Running enthusiast Captain Tom crushes the competition with a total time of 7 minutes and 5 seconds. But he doesn’t stop there. Drinking another beer, Captain Tom runs a fifth lap with the straggler of the group, that day-drinking champ who simply cannot run. What a true champ.
