Patrick Mahomes II is about as close as you can get to the perfect NFL quarterback. That’s not simply a product of his natural abilities and good genes (his father, Pat Mahomes, had an 11-year career as an MLB pitcher).
The Kansas City Chiefs superstar has experienced unprecedented early success—league MVP at 23 years old in his first full season as a starter, Super Bowl MVP at 24 in his second, and now, at age 25, on the cusp of another Super Bowl title—and has worked with performance coach Bobby Stroupe, FAFS, RSCC*D since he was in the fourth grade to fine-tune his training to maximize his abilities. If you ask Mahomes, he still has a long way to go before achieving anything close to perfection. In a recent conversation with Men’s Health, the NFL star spoke of his ambition to work to be the best he can, of always “trying to find the next step.”
Stroupe has been there to help Mahomes in his development for longer than most coaches ever work with a player, which gives him a particularly intimate knowledge of Mahomes’ abilities to help unlock his athletic potential.
Mahomes and Stroupe’s work together revolves around a simple goal: winning the Super Bowl. While they have already accomplished this once, it’s the type of objective that resets with every season, giving the QB and his coach the ability to strive for greatness again and again. As such, the imperative is to make sure that Mahomes is always on the field. “Priority number one is to be resilient,” Stroupe told the MH crew when he opened up about the training program Mahomes uses to prep before the football season. “He’s gotta stay healthy.”
Since the number one objective of Mahomes’ training is to be healthy and move better rather than building muscle and strength for its own sake, guys with less lofty goals might not be interested in putting in the same type of work. The protocol isn’t exactly the type of routine that pays off for the mirror muscles so many guys care about. That’s just fine for Mahomes’ overall goal. There are only 32 men in his position in the world, and he’s on a mission to be the best of them to help his team to win.
Stroupe walked us through a typical training session with Mahomes at the APEC facility in Texas to break down the drills that have helped to mold the brightest QB star in the NFL’s history and prep him ahead of the long football season. Each exercise has a very specific purpose—so take extra time to listen to Stroupe’s explanations. If you want to give these drills a try, remember that Mahomes has a very specific standard he’s working toward, with Stroupe to keep a keen eye on his form—so it’s okay if it doesn’t quite work for you.
“Remember, it’s not about training to be the next Patrick Mahomes,” Stroupe says. “Focus on yourself. Be the best you.”
