Seven years ago, had you asked Alex Kummerow and Julia Wills if they thought their small-batch soaps, sold on Etsy, would transform into a thriving beauty business with products sold just about everywhere (Sephora, Anthropologie, and even select department stores), the Seattle-based couple probably would have responded with a humble chuckle. Fast forward to today, and Herbivore Botanicals has more than two dozen skin-, body-, and hair-care products — with even more on the way.
In fact, Herbivore just launched its Prism Exfoliating Glow Potion, which debuted on Sephora.com on June 28 and has already racked up 5668 (and counting) loves.
Prism is a featherlight, essence-like elixir, made with all-natural fruit acids (malic acid from apple, salicylic acid from willow bark, glycolic acid from bilberry, vitamin C from kakadu plum, and orange peel) to gently exfoliate the skin.
It's also formulated with hydrating ingredients (aloe and rose water) to moisturize as it chemically sloughs away dead skin cells, leaving skin with a soft, subtle glow. "We didn't want to make a harsh acid treatment," Kummerow, one of Herbivore's co-founders, tells Allure. "This is gentle for all skin types to enjoy and use."
Although the ingredient list sounds slightly daunting (acids, ah!), this product is totally safe to use daily on sensitive skin. "I have sensitive skin, so all products get tested on me first, and I've been using it every day," says Kummerow.
Texture-wise, Prism is super lightweight and absorbs almost as soon as it touches skin. "It's somewhere between an essence and a serum," says Kummerow. "So we called it a potion."
There's also no sticky residue to fuss over post-pat — it leaves behind a smooth, virtually undetectable finish. Kummerow recommends Prism as a pre-moisturizer treatment. And he's not wrong.
After cleansing, I apply a gentle toner and then follow it up with Prism. Just seconds after application, my skin is slightly dewy — never wet — which means my moisturizer doesn't pill. The result is a slightly ~prismatic glow. It's so good I almost don't even need to apply BB cream after. (Almost.)
The Herbivore Botanicals Prism Exfoliating Glow Potion is available now for $62 at sephora.com and herbivorebotanicals.com.
