Following on from recent videos where he attempted Olympic weightlifting for the first time, and tried to learn a fitness model’s physique show routine, YouTuber MattDoesFitness is back with another physical challenge. This time around, he is spending the day living like soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo; that means recreating the athlete’s full-on workout routine, as well as his diet.
After a breakfast consisting of an egg white omelet, a bowl of wholegrain cereal, and orange juice, Matt heads to the pitch to start his first workout of the day: shooting drills with Connor Collins, the goalie from his local team. His first attempt at striking… doesn’t go particularly well. “That’s probably going to be a recurring theme today,” he says.
“I feel like I have to choose power or accuracy,” he adds after a few more tries. “If I try to aim where it’s going, it just trickles towards the goal, and if I drill it, it goes miles over.”
Then it’s time for his second meal—tuna salad with tomatoes, onions, eggs and olives—before a leg workout. The first round, which targets the quads, glutes, and hamstrings, includes a single-leg bridge, reverse lunge, and drop squat, with no rest in between. The second round, designed for building lower-body strength, includes the side-lying leg raise, walking dumbbell lunge and jump squat. The third and final round consists of crossback lunge, split squat, bodyweight squat and another jump squat finisher.
“It feels satisfying that you’ve done it,” says Matt. “I did all of that volume in a very short space of time, but it was pretty intense, because it was no recovery and my cardio isn’t very good.”
The post-workout meal is another salad, this time with chicken. Matt follows this with a quick swim, before another protein-rich fourth meal, swordfish, followed by the fifth and final meal of the day, even more chicken salad.
“The meals have been pretty good,” he says. “I would probably want a few more carbs here and there, but generally speaking, I’d be happy to eat this diet. The protein is extremely high, the food has been pretty enjoyable.”
