By the time autumn rolls around, most of us have more frizz than polish, and the culprit is clear: swimming. And as we age, hair becomes drier and more porous, making it extra vulnerable to damage.
Whether you cool off in a pool or the ocean, trichologist (scalp doctor) Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips has advice on how to keep your hair healthy while you dip.
Before you dive in: Saturate hair with fresh water so it can’t absorb as much salt or chlorine.
During your swim: Keep hair tied in a braid or bun to minimize the surface area exposed to water.
After you exit: Gently comb out tangles and, if you can, rinse again with fresh water.
