Remember last summer when Sonic Drive-In briefly added the weird, yet intriguing pickle-flavored slush to its menu? If you thought that was wild, just wait until you feast your eyes on Sonic’s new Reaper Spicy Margarita, which has — you guessed it — Carolina Reaper peppers blended into it. The hotter-than-hot slush is part of Sonic’s new line of Mocktail Slushes.
The world’s hottest pepper in a slush? Yep, Sonic did that. For those who wouldn’t dare try it (us included), Carolina Reaper pepper has a sweet and fruity flavor, followed by an intense heat — and that’s an understatement. This pepper stands at an average of 1.641 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU), and for reference, the habanero pepper sits at an average 100,000 SHU.
“Now, if you think you can handle the heat, take your taste buds on a different kind of trip with the Reaper Spicy Margarita – if you dare,” says Scott Uehlein, vice president of product innovation and development for SONIC, in a press release.
Many have already gotten their hands on it; and while some love it, others are still reeling from the slush’s spiciness.
The other two Mocktail Slushes are Strawberry Daiquiri and Piña Colada, two flavors that are obviously much, much milder and much sweeter in flavor. The daiquiri combines real strawberries and sweet coconut flavor, while the Piña Colada features a blend of sweet coconut flavor and pineapple flavor. The best part is they’re all available for half-price every day from 2 to 4 p.m. during Sonic’s Happy Hour, but get them while you can because they’re only available for a limited time while supplies last.
“With Mocktail Slushes, we captured that summertime mocktail state of mind, combining tropical flavors with our icy, cold Slush so you can enjoy vacation vibes from the comfort of your car,” Uehlein adds.
Anyone else ballsy enough to try the Spicy Reaper Margarita slush are encouraged to share their reactions on social media using the hashtag #ReaperChallenge.
