There’s nothing worse than trying to sleep in a stiflingly hot room.
And if this upcoming heat wave is as bad as experts are predicting, you may be tempted to plug in an electric fan to help you sleep at night.
But it turns out while it may help you get off to sleep, having a fan on at night might not be very good for you in other ways.
Especially if you’re prone to allergies.
According to The sleep advisor, fans can acerbate symptoms of various allergies.
“As a fan moves air around the room, it causes flurries of dust and pollen to make their way into your sinuses.
“If you’re prone to allergies, asthma, and hay fever, this could stir up a whole lot of trouble.
“Also, take a close look at your fan.
“If it’s been collecting dust on the blades, those particles are flying through the air every time you turn it on.”
There’s also the risk of drying out your skin, mouth and even eyes as some people sleep with their eyes open.
It can also dry out your sinuses, meaning you wake up with a headache.
Of course, using one temporarily during a heatwave is unlikely to do you any lasting damage.
But if you’re regularly using one and struggling with dryness and allergies, it might be worth considering alternatives.
