Skin expert reveals the everyday item which might be causing spots on your face

They’re something many people have to deal with each day – spots.

Whether you’re suffering with acne or have just had a bad break out, it can be extremely frustrating to see your face covered in red blemishes.

You can try everything, from face washes to masks and creams, but they might not stop the spots from coming back.

And according to Dr Anjali Mahto, author of The Skincare Bible, the reason why your skin is reacting this way might surprise you.

Today has been spent at the Royal College of Physicians lecturing on a dermatology masterclass for GPs in London. My talk was about “sensible answers for treating adult acne” and I wanted to give a shout out to all those people who took time to message me a few days ago about what they felt the medical profession could do better when it came to acne problems. My talk started with sharing your many comments about being feeling unheard or dismissed to over 100 doctors and placed emphasis on recognising the importance of mental health issues associated with a long-term skin condition. You wanted more information about skincare routines, treatment choices and dietary and lifestyle measures. This is what I spent my time sharing information and educating about today. I have listened and there are some fantastic, inspiring GPs out there who are ready to make a difference. Hopefully, together we can make the neglect that those with skin conditions feel a thing of the past! I hear what you’ve said from the unique position of both a treating dermatologist and an acne sufferer of over 25 years. Thank you again for your insights and also to all the lovely people who listened and asked so many questions afterwards. All in all a productive day! #dermatology #dermatologist #boardcertified #skin #skincare #skincareroutine #skincaretips #lifestyle #healthylifestyle #antiaging #aesthetics #beauty #beautyblogger #bblogger #beautycare #luxurylifestyle #women #makeup #selfcare #confidence #confident #theskincarebible #london #chelsea #harleystreet #instabeauty #styleinspo #doctor #medicine

Dr Mahto opened up about some of the main causes of spots to Refinery29 and she revealed that one of the things behind your break out could actually be your mobile phone.

She said: "So why do we get spots on our face, back and chest? Because this is where we have the highest density of oil-producing glands. The science tells us this.

"Certain areas where spots can occur may be related to external factors and I certainly don’t deny that.

"Spots in the forehead may be related to heavy waxes or sprays being applied to the hair when styling – known as the ‘pomade acne’ – and use of heavy, oil-based foundations can lead to blocked pores, otherwise known as ‘acne cosmetica’.

"Spots on one cheek could be related to mobile phone use, where a dirty screen surface combined with heat and occlusion, may stimulate the oil glands."

It’s therefore important to make sure your phone screen is kept as clean as possible at all times.

Dr Mahto has also been sharing some of her skincare knowledge on Instagram.

So you have an #acne break out at the most unfortunate time? Just before a wedding or important social event? For me, it is guaranteed to happen just before doing any filming, having my picture taken or a big speaking event ?- every single time. So what can you do? Well, firstly if it’s the odd few solitary spots then dermatologists can inject a small amount of steroid directly into an acne cyst to make it go down within a matter of days. This comes with a risk and should only by done by an expert otherwise you may end up with a rather large indented scar (or atrophy). Alternatively, over the counter measures (which will be less efficient but still worth a go) include using a targeted spot treatment containing 2% salicylic acid to help reduce inflammation, pain and swelling. If you are getting a lot of these cysts or deep, red spots then try not to deal with it alone and seek medical help as skincare alone is unlikely to solve the issue #boardcertified #skin #skincare #skincareroutine #skincaretips #lifestyle #healthylifestyle #antiaging #aesthetics #beauty #beautyblogger #bblogger #beautycare #luxurylifestyle #women #makeup #selfcare #confidence #confident #theskincarebible #london #chelsea #harleystreet #instabeauty #styleinspo #doctor #medicine

She recently shared some of her top tips for cleansing your face and clearing spots quickly.

In a short video, she explained: "Sometimes we do break out at the most unfortunate times and if you’ve got a big social event coming up, for example a wedding and you find you break out a couple of days before hand it is actually possible to make that spot go down very quickly.

"A dermatologist can inject a small amount of steroid into the spot and it will go down in about 24-48 hours."

She added: "In terms of over-the-counter measures it’s worthwhile looking for a targeted spot treatment that contains at least two percent salicylic acid.

"Personally I use a product either by Kiehls or The Ordinary depending on what’s available to me."
