The Summer Olympics are scheduled to begin on July 23 in Tokyo, while the city is in a state of emergency because of an increase in COVID-19 cases. Officials have banned spectators for many events.
In May, the Tokyo Medical Practitioners Association urged the International Olympic Committee to cancel the games. Even though athletes might be at low risk for severe COVID-19 themselves, they could become infected during the Olympics and could infect others when they return home, some experts worry.
