Sam Allardyce, 64, underwent heart surgery after suffering from discomfort in his chest. The football boss missed three Premier League matches due to his ill health at the time. A statement on the Blackburn Rovers website said Allardyce “has recently complained of brief episodes of chest discomfort and investigations have revealed a narrowing to one branch of his coronary arteries. Sam will next week undergo an angioplasty with the insertion of a stent to correct this narrowing.”
The term angioplasty means using a balloon to stretch open a narrowed or blocked artery

A coronary angioplasty is a procedure used to widen blocked or narrowed coronary arteries.
The NHS said: “The term angioplasty means using a balloon to stretch open a narrowed or blocked artery.
“However, most modern angioplasty procedures also involve inserting a short-wire mesh tube, called a stent, into the artery during the procedure.
“The stent is left in place permanently to allow blood to flow more frequent.”
Allardyce has said he is now “fit and well” after the successful heart surgery.
Speaking to the Guardian in 2010, Allardyce said: “I feel good. Lots of people have contacted me, I have been overwhelmed with the amount of well-wishers.
“I’d like to thank them now, publicly, because it’s been almost impossible for me to get back to every single person that has been a well-wisher.
“I am fit and well now and I really appreciate their concern. At the moment I feel really good.”
Heart and circulatory diseases cause more than a quarter of all deaths in the UK, which equates to around 170,000 deaths each year, an average of 460 deaths each day or one every three minutes in the UK.
British Heart Foundation said: “Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart and circulatory disease. It is also the most common cause of heart attack.
“In the UK there are more than 100,000 hospital admissions each year due to heart attacks.”
A heart attack occurs when the flow of blood to the heart is blocked. The blockage is most often a build up of fat, cholesterol and other substances.
The symptoms to look out for include a pressure or tightness in the chest or arms that may spread to the neck, jaw or back.
Nausea, indigestion, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, cold sweats, fatigue or a lightheadedness are other signs of a heart attack.
Heart attack risks are higher for people who smoke, consume a high-fat diet, have high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure or are overweight.
Allardyce admitted to having to change his lifestyle to ensure good health. “I’ll look after myself a bit more than I did before, keep my cholesterol down, keep going for regular testing and do more exercise if and when possible,” he said.
Allardyce’s health will certainly have to be in tip top shape as the former England manager is tipped to appear on the next series of Strictly Come Dancing.
The announcement has yet to be confirmed however radio presenter Iain Lee, let slip on Good Morning Britain that a rumoured contestant known as ‘Big Sam’ could be one of the contestants.
The official announcement is set to be made on The One Show in due course.
