Dentist reveals how much toothpaste you should use
A dentist has warned that consuming healthy foods like citruses and balsamic vinegar could spell bad news for your smile.
While these foods might not seem harmful, they are highly acidic which can erode your tooth enamel.
Dr Abdul Azizi, Principal Dentist of Harley Private Dental Clinic, said: “Maintaining good oral health involves not only brushing and flossing but also being mindful of your diet.
“While many people are aware that sugary foods and acidic beverages can harm their teeth, some foods might be surprisingly bad for your dental health.”
1. Citrus fruits
Packed with vitamin C and other nutrients, citruses like lemons, oranges and grapefruits could make your teeth more susceptible to cavities and sensitivity due to their high acidic content.

Dr Azizi said: “Rinse your mouth with water after consuming citrus fruits.”
2. Dried fruits
While this might seem like another healthy option, dried fruits, such as raisins, apricots, and dates, are sticky and high in natural sugars.
Dr Azizi explained that the stickiness can cling to your teeth, increasing your risk of cavities. “If you enjoy dried fruits, rinse your mouth and brush your teeth afterwards,” he added.
3. Potato crisps
The tasty treat can get stuck in the crevices of your teeth, leading to plaque build-up and potentially cavities.
Dr Azizi recommended opting for healthier, less starchy snacks like raw vegetables.
4. Ice
While chewing on ice may seem harmless, the popular habit can actually cause microfractures in your tooth enamel, weakening the structure over time.
Dr Azizi said: “These microfractures can accumulate, eventually leading to more significant cracks or chips in the teeth.”
5. Vinegar
Vinegar is a popular ingredient in healthy salad dressings but it can also weaken your tooth enamel over time.

Dr Azizi said to enjoy these foods in moderation and consider drinking water afterwards to help neutralise the acid.
6. Soda bread
The sticky and doughy bread, which is rich in added sugars, can contribute to tooth decay. “If you consume soda bread, be sure to practise good oral hygiene,” Dr Azizi said.
7. Balsamic vinegar
Dr Azizi recommended using balsamic vinegar in moderation because it’s very acidic and can stain your teeth.
8. Sports and energy drinks
The popular beverages are often high in sugar and acidity, which can erode your tooth enamel and promote cavities.
Therefore, Dr Azizi recommended sticking to water for hydration.
He added: “Remember, it’s not just what you eat but also how often you consume these foods that can impact your dental health.
“If you do indulge in such foods, practising good oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, can help mitigate the potential harm to your teeth.
“Additionally, drinking water after consuming acidic or sugary foods can help neutralise the acids and wash away food particles.”
