High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK. But, you could lower your risk of developing hypertension by adding certain exercises to your workout routine.

High blood pressure – which is also known as hypertension – puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

The condition could lead to some deadly complications, including strokes and heart attacks.

It could be caused by eating an unhealthy diet, or by not doing enough exercise.

One of the best activities to protect against high blood pressure is yoga, it’s been claimed.

Yoga could lower your blood pressure as it promotes relaxation, according to nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.

The combination of stretching exercises with different postures is an ideal activity for hypertension patients.

Practicing yoga for at least eight weeks could lower your blood pressure by around 5/4mmHg, scientists have revealed.

If you’re entirely new to yoga, you could feel the benefits within just nine days, added the nutritionist.

“Yoga is one of the most effective natural remedies for high blood pressure,” Brewer wrote on her website, MyLowerBloodPressure.com.

“There are many types of yoga, of which hatha yoga is most commonly practiced. This combines stretching exercises and physical postures with breath control and meditation to achieve well-being.

“For optimum benefit, Yoga is practiced three or four times a week for 30 to 60 minutes per session.

“Start slowly, however, in a beginner’s class, and gradually increase the amount of time you devote to this activity.”

If you have high blood pressure and decide to take up yoga, there are some precautions that you should take, however.

Avoid any yoga poses that include head or shoulder stands, as they can temporarily raise your blood pressure further.

Meanwhile, hypertension patients should avoid weight lifting, as it can be particularly dangerous.

The exercise can cause blood pressure to spike, which raises the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
