Around a third of adults in the UK have high blood pressure, although many will not realise it. Despite it impacting around 26 percent of the world’s population, many of the symptoms can go unnoticed. There are, however, actions a person can take to reduce high blood pressure.
Eating yogurt can help older adults who have high blood pressure, according to a new study published in the International Dairy Journal.
Diet has been suggested as a way of lowering blood pressure as a result of several studies.
In this case, researchers analysed cross-sectional data for 915 adults, with an average age of 62, from the Maine-Syracuse Longitudinal Study.
Approximately 62 percent of the sample had high blood pressure.

The paper says that analysis revealed modest but statistically significant reductions in systolic blood pressure among those with high blood pressure who consumed yogurt.
There was no improvement associated with eating yogurt in those with normal blood pressure.
The findings were before and after adjusting for other variables known to influence blood pressure, including age, gender, diabetes, cholesterol, and other dietary variables.
If untreated, high blood pressure increases your risk of serious problems such as heart attacks and strokes.
The only way to find out if your blood pressure is high is to have your blood pressure checked.
Blood pressure is recorded with two numbers.
The systolic pressure, the higher number, is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body.
The diastolic pressure, the lower number, is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels.
All adults over 40 are advised to have their blood pressure checked at least every 5 years.
“Everyone’s blood pressure will be slightly different. What’s considered low or high for you may be normal for someone else,” the NHS website states.
If your blood pressure is too high, it puts extra strain on your blood vessels, heart and other organs.
Making lifestyle changes can sometimes help reduce your chances of getting high blood pressure and help lower it.
This might include reducing the amount of salt you eat and reducing the amount of alcohol you consume.
The NHS added that you can lower your blood pressure by cutting down on caffeine.
Some people with high blood pressure may also need to take one or more medicines to stop their blood pressure from getting too high.
It’s important that tea and coffee “are not your main or only source of fluid”.
