Veganism isn’t for everyone, and apparently Below Deck Mediterranean’s Captain Sandy Yawn isn’t a fan—but it’s not for lack of trying.
Last year, Sandy told The Feast that she was considering going vegan since she only eats fish, and not much of it. Her work also inspired her. “I did drive a [marine conservation] Sea Shepherd vessel for a little bit,” she said. “So I’m very conscious about what I eat. And I try not to eat fish, because of the awareness of what’s happening to our planet.”
Sandy also moved to Los Angeles around the same time and was naturally influenced by her environment. “There’s a lot of vegan here. I could become a vegan,” she said.
Just a quick FYI: Vegan diets are notoriously strict. Followers swear off all animal products—that means no meat, no fish, and no cheese, milk, or anything else that comes from an animal.
Now, a year later, Sandy said she gave veganism a try…and it just wasn’t a good fit. “OK, so… vegan I am not,” she said. “I eat fish responsibly that’s on the [sustainable] list.”
Sandy says she did follow a vegan diet for a while but, it kinda made her feel like crap. “Honestly, I try, but I didn’t feel well to be honest. I didn’t have the energy,” she said. “Some bodies just aren’t cut to go vegan. I tried.”
Now, Sandy says she just lets her girlfriend decide what they eat. “I mean, I’m one of those people [who’s laid back about food],” she said. “I’m not that person [who has to decide]: As a captain, we constantly make decisions. When I’m with someone else, i don’t want to make a decision. I don’t want to choose.”
