Dunkin’, McDonald’s is coming for you. Business Insider has the scoop on McDonald’s soon-to-come breakfast menu item, and it sounds a whole lot like one of Dunkin’s more popular items, Donut Fries.
Back in April 2018 — long before Dunkin’ changed its name — the coffee, doughnut and breakfast fast food chain introduced Donut Fries as a test item. Suffice it to say, it took off. In August, the fries made its return to Dunkin’s menu, and Dunkin’ brands CEO David Hoffman called the menu item “one of the best-performing limited-time offer bakery items in recent brand history.”
McDonald’s clearly saw the success of Donut Fries and wants to get in on the action this year.
McDonald’s plans to launch Donut Sticks for a limited time in February, according to documents viewed by Business Insider. These deep-fried, sweetened dough strips sprinkled with cinnamon sugar are described further by the documents as “light and crunchy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside.”
Available only for breakfast, McDonald’s Donut Sticks can be purchased as a half dozen for $1.29 or as a dozen for $2.39, or customers can make it a meal, ordering a half dozen with a small hot coffee on the side for $1.99. Not a bad deal at all.
This new McDonald’s breakfast item follows a recent string of attempts at revamping its breakfast menu to boost sales.
In August 2018, McDonald’s launched a limited release of a new breakfast sandwich, the McGriddles French toast breakfast sandwich. It was only available in just over 200 locations in Minnesota.
But on Nov. 1, 2018, McDonald’s added a new breakfast item to its menu, the Triple Breakfast Stack, something they haven’t done since 2013. Linda VanGosen, vice president of menu innovation at McDonald’s called this a “customer-led menu innovation” in a press release.
“Our customers have told us they have been craving a bigger, more filling sandwich option in the morning,” VanGosen says.
According to Business Insider, McDonald’s declined to confirm plans to roll out Donut Sticks, but they did say in a statement that customers could expect “more delicious and craveable news to come in 2019.”
It’s OK to talk about these Donut Sticks, McDonald’s. You know we all want them.
