If you’re like us, grocery shopping in the time of COVID-19 is one risky behavior you’ve been trying to avoid at all costs. That means we’ve been stocking up on shelf-stable ingredients so we can make tons of pantry-reliant recipes (Giada de Laurentiis and Ina Garten have lots of yummy options), loading up on frozen pizzas, and relying on grocery delivery when we really need something from the store. But we’re not the only ones who have been using online grocery delivery, and Amazon is now so overwhelmed with orders, that they’ve temporarily stopped accepting new delivery customers.
The company has announced that Amazon Fresh and Amazon Prime Now, which offer grocery delivery from Amazon and Whole Foods, will be adding new customers to a wait list so that they’re better able to serve existing customers. The company’s online grocery orders are up 60 percent since the start of the coronavirus outbreak, and they’re becoming overwhelmed.
Along with pausing the acceptance of new delivery customers, Amazon is also looking to increase the number of employees they have working on filling grocery orders and making deliveries. They’re also modifying the hours of some Whole Foods stores. These select stores will be open to the public for a shorter period each day, so that employees can devote more time to fulfilling online grocery orders. In addition, Amazon now offers groceries for in-store pick up at more than 150 Whole Foods locations, which is up from 80 just a few weeks ago.
