Coca-Cola is about as classic as they come. The sweet, fizzy cola has long been one of our mixers of choice, in college for making Diet Coke and Anythings (hey, we couldn’t afford to be picky), and as an adult, for making top-notch Rum & Coke’s. But the Coca-Cola company is taking their product’s reputation as an excellent mixer even further, and have released a line of Coca-Cola Signature Mixers which are specifically crafted to be paired with hard alcohol.
The one heartbreaking catch? Coca-Cola Signature Mixers are only available in the U.K. for now, though there is hope they’ll make their way across the pond eventually.
The new mixers work best with dark alcohol — think whiskey, rum, añejo tequila, or smoky mezcal. You can choose from four different flavor profiles, including Herbal, Spicy, Woody, and Smoky. They all sound amazing. The description of the Spicy flavor nearly brought us to our knees: “Citrusy lime, ginger, spicy jalapeño, fragrant rosemary, and aromatic jasmine combine to create a mixer with a considered balance of zest and earthy flavours that pairs beautifully with spiced rums, aged/gold tequilas and spicy or sweet whiskies.” Um, okay Coca-Cola! Way to bring it.
Each mixer pairs a light sweetness with heady flavor notes that pick up on the complex bouquet of your favorite dark liquor, enhancing the tastes and aromas that are already present and adding a few notes of their own. They come fancy glass bottles that you’ll want to display on your bar, not hide in the back of your fridge behind some kale.
The mixers will be available this June in the U.K., but there’s no telling how long we’ll have to wait to see them stateside. In the meantime, we do have a few cola options for mixing. On the mainstream side there’s Pepsi 1893, a line of canned soda that is sweetened lightly with real sugar and comes in a few different flavors specifically intended to pair with alcohol, and there are plenty of ginger beer and root beer options to choose from.
Finding that perfect cola, though, is still a challenge. It’s hard to find one that’s not so sweet it overwhelms the rest of your drink. Here’s hoping that the Coca Cola Signature Mixers eventually make their way over here…it would be interesting to see how one of my college classic cola-and-vodkas would taste with both mixers and vodka that actually taste good!
