Chick-fil-A will no longer be donating to organizations that have garnered the chain criticism by LGBT activists, according to Business Insider.
The chain announced the 2020 priorities for its Chick-fil-A Foundation in a blog post Monday, saying it will be enacting a “more focused giving approach to provide additional clarity and impact with the causes it supports.” The chain listed the foundations it will support, which included groups working toward the causes of education, homelessness, and hunger.
Noticeably absent from the list was the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Salvation Army, two groups that Chick-fil-A has donated to in the past to criticism from LGBT groups. The chain confirmed to Business Insider that it will no longer be donating to those groups. Chick-fil-A confirmed to Delish that the contributions listed on the post would be its only contributions for 2020.
Chick-fil-A frequently donated millions to anti-LGBT groups in the past, earning the restaurant boycotts and a fair amount of controversy. Although Chick-fil-A stopped donating to many of those groups back in 2012, a ThinkProgress investigation earlier this year found that the chain was still donating to groups that have expressed anti-LGBT views.
Now, the chain will pivot its givings to organizations like Covenant House International and pledged to donate $25,000 to a local food bank at each of its new restaurant openings.
“Since the beginning of the Chick-fil-A Foundation, more than $52 million has been donated to support education, entrepreneurship and leadership development. The Foundation has made these changes to create more clarity and to better address three critical needs facing children across the communities we serve,” the post read.
Chick-fil-A also clarified in the post that it will no longer be making multi-year commitments to any charitable group, but will instead reassess its donations every year.
