In a new video on his YouTube channel, British bodybuilder and CrossFit athlete Obi Vincent teams up with Steve Cook, a pro bodybuilder and two-time Mr. Olympia top 10 finisher, to take on an intense CrossFit WOD. Having trained hard to get back into peak shape after recovering from Covid last year, Cook more than ready for the challenge while visiting the United Kingdom.
Vincent programs a workout consisting of four exercises: 200 double unders, 100 power cleans, 100 burpees over the barbell, then finishing with a 200cal session on the SkiErg. He explains that he intentionally set out to program the workout in such a way to yield bodybuilding benefits for himself and Cook.
“Lifting under fatigue, that’s why I put the barbell cycle in after the double unders,” he says. “You’re tired, but guess what, you need to use a lot of your muscle to literally use every single strength you have to cycle that barbell.”
Cook states that the double unders were the best part of the workout for him personally, and is pleased with the pump that he’s got by the end of the session.
“The muscular endurance aspect of these types of training, there is something to it,” he says. “We all think hypertrophy rep range is 8 to 12 reps, but there’s something about going hard on a hypertrophy element. Going 10 cals the SkiErg, there’s not time under tension in that, so there is a muscular endurance element for sure.”
“In CrossFit, there is a pump,” he continues. “You go to the Games workouts, you see these guys, like damn, that guy is fully jacked. I do think there’s something to training under that duration and stress where you are building a decent amount of muscle… Absolutely amazing workout, though. I’m gassed.”
