Victor Cruz’s cheat day is more of a lifestyle than a culinary break. Cheat day means all day, no shoes, feet up, out of my way.
And why not? Cruz, the former salsa-ing star receiver of the New York Giants, is done with his playing days. Back then, he was an undrafted player out of UMass, battling to make a name for himself, so he had to eat tight, train hard, and ditch the chocolate cake and apple pie. But since retiring before the 2018 season, Cruz, 32, no longer has those restrictions.
So the man has some fun. Yeah, he still works out 3 to 4 days a week, and when he’s training in the gym, he trains hard. And he still looks the part, too, 190 pounds of solid muscle and explosion, better for him to hit the playground basketball blacktop. But he can have a little fun these days, and when he cheats, he does exactly that. “I do not workout on a cheat day,” says Cruz. “I devote my entire 24 hours to the cheat day.”
So while an average Cruz diet might include an acai bowl for breakfast, a turkey sandwich for lunch, and a pasta and salad for dinner, it’s a very different story come cheat day.
First off, the man sleeps a ton on cheat days. He rolls out of bed at 11 on cheat days, then heads straight to the kitchen for breakfast. That meal is um . . . cinnamon rolls. And not one roll either. “I have like six of them,” says Cruz.
For lunch he goes to his favorite restaurant for a veggie burger — “not necessarily cheating,” Cruz points out. But Cruz more than makes up for his low-cal lunch with his snacking: chips, ranch dip, sour-cream-and-onion dip, cheese dip.
Dinner is all about Puerto Rican rice and bean dishes. And then for dessert, Cruz spoons an apple cobbler with not one, but two scoops of ice-cream. Why two? “Because I’m a grown boy.”
And the next day, this grown boy is back to some squats.
