Kylie Jenner's BFF Jordyn Woods: 'I Don't Want To Be Skinny—I Want To Be Healthy'

Growing up, I was a tomboy, partially because there wasn’t much clothing for me to choose from. Every time I would try to go to the mall, I couldn’t really find anything that fit or looked cute—the sizes at the stores my friends were shopping at didn’t work for me as a curvier girl. So instead, I gravitated toward my dad’s big T-shirts.

Today, things have changed a lot for me: I’m a curvy model, and I’m launching my own activewear line, SECNDNTURE, to create the types of clothes I wish I’d had—things I still want now.

It wasn’t until the end of last year that I really got into fitness, and going through that journey in the public eye hasn’t always been easy.

When I lost my dad, I turned to working out as a form of therapy. But because I’m a curvy model, once I started working out a lot, people thought that I was doing it to try to look different.

People started saying, “You’re not body positive anymore,” or, “You aren’t trying to be yourself anymore,” when really, I feel like body positivity is loving yourself and wanting to be the best version of you. But working out doesn’t mean I’m not happy with my appearance, it just helps me get through things that are deeper than what’s on the outside. I created a healthier lifestyle for myself.

Someone actually called me and said: “Jordyn, you’re getting too skinny!” But “skinny” has never been my goal. My ultimate goal is health.

I constantly see people commenting, “Oh, you’re losing weight now? I used to support you, but now I don’t.”

Ultimately, you have to take care of yourself and not stress about what other people have to say though. If I want to shave my head tomorrow and gain 50 pounds, or grow my hair long and lose 50 pounds, I have the freedom to do that. People will get used to it. It’s your life and you can’t change for anyone else except yourself.

While it has its downsides, having a large following can also be a huge blessing. When I post workout videos on social media, I’m reaching people of all ages in a positive way. Even people my mom’s age have told her, “I look forward to Jordyn’s workout videos in the morning because it actually motivates me to get up and do something.”

These days, I’ve really found my style and my confidence. With SECNDNTURE, I wanted to create something for everyone—clothes available in a wide range of styles and sizes, that can not only be worn in the gym but on any occasion. “Second nature” means something that comes naturally to you, and your activewear should always feel that way.

When I wake up every day, I try to set one goal for myself. Sometimes my goal is to take a day for myself and relax, watch a show, or get my nails done. Sometimes it’s going to the gym. If that’s the one thing that’s going to make me feel better, then that’s what I’m going to do. I try to become a better person every day, and that’s helped me a lot.
