Having too much visceral fat has been linked to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, heart disease and certain cancers, according to studies.

Fat cells do more than simply store excess energy.

They also produce hormones and inflammatory substances. Long-lasting inflammation may cause plaque to form inside the arteries, which is a risk factor for heart disease.

Vinegar has been used medicinally for thousands of years to help with a myriad of health problems.

Acetic acid found in vinegar helps the body suppress body fat through a process called inhibition of lipogenesis (fat storage).

The acetic acid blocks the ability of certain enzymes to create fatty acids in the body. When a person consumes vinegar, it acts as a mediator to control chemical processes that would otherwise create fat.

What the study said

A study in Japan looked at vinegar intake and how it could help reduce body weight, fat mass and serum triglyceride levels was analysed.

The study involved 155 obese subjects and analysed their consumption of vinegar and how it helped reduce fat in a 12-week treatment period.

During the trial, volunteers drank 500 ml beverage containing vinegar doses of 750 mg, 1500 mg or 0mg placebo.

Apple cider vinegar was selected because of it being more palatable.

Participants drinking the low and high doses of vinegar began showing positive results.

During week four, test subjects decreased in weight, body, fat percentage and BMI compared to the placebo group.

In addition to helping with fat loss, other health benefits were discovered during the study.

There were significant decreases in visceral fat for participants drinking both low and high vinegar doses.

Research findings show reduced visceral fat has a positive effect on metabolic risk factors like hypertension and impaired glucose tolerance.

Also noted were reduced triglyceride levels lowering the risk of heart disease.

Apple cider vinegar is extremely beneficial for reduced weight, decreased visceral and subcutaneous fat and lowered triglyceride levels according to the study.
