When diagnosed with hypertension, it is in your best interest to reduce your blood pressure reading; in order to do so, one dessert could help do just that. Researchers from the Graduate School of Medical Science, at Kanazawa University, highlighted the nutrient-dense dessert that could help lower blood pressure. Rich in potassium and calcium – two elements said to be beneficial for your blood pressure – what is this dessert choice?

The answer is natural Greek yoghurt, which you can for just 85p in a supermarket.

Regarded as a type of probiotic fermented milk, a meta-analysis of 14 studies – involving more than 700 participants – found that its consumption helped to reduce blood pressure.

However, the research is not conclusive as another analysis reported that 156 overweight participants did not benefit from lowered blood pressure when eating yoghurt.

Although these findings could have something to do with the fact that being overweight is a significant risk factor for high blood pressure.

As the charity Blood Pressure UK pointed out: “Being overweight is strongly linked with high blood pressure and a number of related health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke.”

Other risk factors include drinking too much alcohol, eating too much fat, sugar and salt, and not eating enough vegetables and fruits.

As such, if you are going to try eating natural Yoghurt for your dessert, by adding in pieces of fruit, you can have a nutritious and tasty bite to eat.

Fruits also contain potassium, which the charity verified “helps to lower your blood pressure”.

“There are lots of simple things you can do to start lowering your blood pressure today,” the charity stated.

If you want to add more variety to your yoghurt and fruit meal, the charity recommends making a tropical fruit salad.

Ingredients include yoghurt, dried fruits, nuts, or muesli stirred in.

Alternatively, you could make a smoothie with yoghurt and frozen berries.

Aside from dietary considerations, in order to lower your blood pressure, it will help to ease any feelings of stress.

“Feeling stressed over a long time can take its toll on your health,” the charity said.

In stressful situations, the body releases a surge of hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol.

These stress hormones induce the “fight or flight” response by causing your heart to beat faster and your blood vessels to narrow.

Both of these factors – an increased heart rate and restricted blood vessels – raise your blood pressure.

Feeling stressed out can also lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as smoking, drinking alcohol or eating too much.

All three of these unhealthy coping mechanisms will further raise blood pressure.

Watch out for early signs of stress, which includes sweating, loss of appetite, headaches, poor concentration and feeling irritable.
