There exist certain beloved desserts that you can’t imagine getting much better than they already are. Why mess with perfection, right? And while we’ve always been purists where the classic ice cream sundae is concerned, it’s official — we’ve been converted by Chrissy Teigen’s ice cream sundae secret ingredient. It’s crunchy, it’s nostalgic, and it’s totally unexpected. Give up? It’s animal crackers, y’all. This woman is a visionary.
Teigen shared her animal sundae recipe remix via her Cravings by Chrissy Teigen blog this week, dubbing it an “upgraded” version of the dessert. “Few things bring me back to childhood more than a classic hot fudge sundae. The combo of warm, gooey fudge with cold ice cream is heaven — and if it melts into a milkshake, even better. These days, I love to make them with the kids,” she said, before revealing the real reason she reached for her delightfully quirky special ingredient: daughter Luna’s 4th birthday on Tuesday.
“For Luna’s birthday, we decided to make their sundaes a bit more special by adding some frosted circus animal crackers (remember those??),” shared Teigen. “Then, I topped it off with this simple homemade hot fudge sauce.” The mom-of-two — Luna’s little bro Miles undoubtedly digs this recipe, too — then gave us all permission to “use as much fudge as you want!” Um, done and done, Teigs.
As far as the actual recipe for Teigen’s hot fudge, it’s pleasantly low-key. It only takes five minutes to prep and around 10 minutes to actually make. You know it’s good because the simple list of ingredients consists of heavy whipping cream, light corn syrup, brown sugar, cocoa powder, bittersweet chocolate chips, vanilla extract and fine sea salt.
Plus, since a little goes a long way, Teigen says you can just store anything leftover in the fridge and gently reheat “when the next birthday (or weekday) comes around.” Whenever you’re having sundaes with your homemade sauce, though, the cookbook author says you should pile it up with your topping of choice.
And thanks to her, our go-to for the foreseeable future is going to be frosted animal crackers.
