This \u2018Powerlifting Grandma\u2019 Just Deadlifted 195 Pounds

An 84-year-old “powerlifting grandma” just pulled 195 pounds without breaking a sweat. Competitive powerlifter Carrie Reese showed off her deadlift strength and form during a 5 a.m. workout at Old Skool Iron in Vacaville, California over the weekend—and her trainer Eric Cranage was so impressed that he shared the video on the gym’s Instagram page.

“Let’s hold it,” Reese jokes at the upper end of the lift after bringing 195-pound (88 kgs) bar up with ease, before dropping it back to the mat. For context, Reese herself currently only weighs 132 pounds, meaning she was lifting almost one and a half times her bodyweight.

According to the caption for the short video, Reese had “plenty left in the tank” after the deadlift. And her competitive stats certainly corroborate that; 195 pounds isn’t even the heaviest she’s pulled. Her raw deadlift record is 217 pounds, while she has benched 91 pounds, and she currently holds the world record for her age and weight category in both these events with the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters.

Edith Murway-Traina, a 100-year-old great-grandmother, recently made it into the Guinness Book of World Records when she was officially granted the title of the world’s oldest competitive powerlifter. What’s more, she didn’t even take up lifting until she was already in her nineties—proving that it really is never too late to try new things and keep pushing the limits of what you think you can do.
