Here's How K-Pop Group NCT 127 Keeps Their Rainbow Hair So Healthy

With NCT 127's leader Taeyong changing up his hair color as often as I pay rent — monthly — K-pop fans often wonder how he, as well as other idols who constantly dye their hair, keeps his hair healthy. Luckily, NCT 127 recently answered the one major question I wasn't able to squeeze in when I interviewed Taeyong earlier this year: How do you protect your hair from the damaging effects of frequent bleaching?

In a Wired video that dropped on Thursday, the 10-member Korean boy group answered questions about K-pop from Twitter. In addition to covering their definition of what a K-pop star is, how such a big group of people can get along so well, and what the training process is like, they also shared the products they use to keep their hair healthy. Baylee (or @fvrdreams) asked NCT 127, "How do the K-pop stars keep their hair looking so good even after dyeing it so many times?" Turns out, they don't seek out anything too fancy.

Jaehyun, who currently has ashy lavender hair, immediately listed off "treatment," and red-haired Taeil agreed. I'm guessing he's referring a bond builder like Olaplex or even a mask. Haechan, who has golden brown hair right now, added that conditioner and shampoo — probably ones specifically for color-treated hair — help, too. Johnny, who recently returned to black hair after trying out a copper hue, emphasized that lots of conditioner is needed. If you need a recommendation, try the Redken Color Extend Magnetics Shampoo and Conditioner, which won Best of Beauty Awards this year.

However, silver-haired Taeyong believes that their hair isn't as smooth and damage-free as you may think it is. "Actually, I don't think our hair is that healthy, right?" Now seems like a good time to point out that the rapper/dancer has a mullet at the moment, despite telling me he didn't plan to try out the polarizing hair trend. Yup, Taeyong lied to me, and I've never been betrayed like this before. Facts aside, Johnny added, "As long as [our hair] looks good, you know?"

Another question brought up in the video focused on skin care. Someone asked, "How do all the K-pop stars have such nice skin? What water do they drink?" Taeyong went on to joke that Seoul's water system called Arisu might play a role in their clear skin. Noted. I'll have to bottle up some of the water and bright it back to the U.S. next time I'm there.
