A Starbucks in Mexico has become the first to be run solely by senior citizens, WPXI reports. The hiring influx was a partnership between Starbucks and the National Institute for the Elderly to provide more employment opportunities for seniors.
According to the station, the Mexico City outpost recently employed seven people between the ages of 55 and 60. The partners’ shifts are reportedly six-and-a-half hours long and they are guaranteed two full days off every week. Additionally, Reuters reports, all these staffers are insured for major medical expenses.
While they are there, they are being trained by younger staff members who’ve been charged with training them and catching them up to speed. There are aspects of the job that have been tailored to the elder employees for safety reasons, Yahoo! explains, such as lowering shelves.
Starbucks reportedly plans to employ at least 120 senior citizens by next year.
