‘Real Housewives Of Orange County’ Star Gina Kirschenheiter Says The Keto Diet Is ‘Stupid’

Plenty of celebrities have weighed in with their thoughts on the keto diet, and results have been mixed: Some love it; others…not so much. You can throw Real Housewives of Orange County newbie Gina Kirschenheiter into the latter camp.

For the record, Gina has never tried keto, but she has some strong—if somewhat misinformed—thoughts about the whole thing.

“I think it’s kinda weird,” she told The Feast. “I don’t know—I don’t get it. It’s like, just eat only sticks of butter and then you’re going to lose weight? I don’t really understand that. I feel like that’s probably a slippery slope for me.”

Still, Gina says she “guesses” it works. “Like, you eat only basically fat, and then your body basically rejects itself, and loses it? It doesn’t make science sense to me,” she said. “My friend did it, and she says she lost five pounds—and I’m like yeah, but that’s because you just lost five pounds [you gained] from eating bacon all day long.” Gina says she “talked at one point about trying it, and then I was just kind of like…eh, that sounds stupid, I’m not doing it.”

That’s fair, but clearly, Gina needs to do a little more research on what keto actually is. For one, the diet focuses on healthy fats, not just butter and bacon (unless you’re doing “dirty keto”—a.k.a a less-healthy version of the plan). And then there’s Gina’s theory that the “body basically rejects itself” to burn fat which…isn’t true either. (She might be referring to ketosis, the state during which your body burns fat for fuel instead of carbs.)

Still, Gina’s not the first Real Housewives star to have strong thoughts on the keto diet. Fellow RHOC star Tamra Judge actually tried keto and said it wasn’t for her. Tamra told The Feast that she tried it for a month or so before she “got sick.” “They say there’s this keto flu you get, and I just fell off the keto wagon,” she said.

She didn’t stop there. “Okay, so here’s my thoughts on it,” she said. “I’m sure it works, but I cannot wrap my brain around eating that much fat. Bad fat—cheese, sour cream, butter, all that stuff. So, I like to do the good fats—like I’ll do the avocado, but I’m not gonna drown my eggs in butter and throw the cheese of top of it. Just—I can’t.”

Tamra also said that the diet “doesn’t make any sense to me because it’s just not healthy eating and that she worries about “what it’s gonna do for, like, your heart, your cholesterol, and things like that. So I pretty much stick to a similar diet, but I just don’t go for the bad fat.”

RHOC star Heather Dubrow also trashed the keto diet. In an interview with The Feast, she said it’s “not sustainable…I don’t like the keto diet.” She added, “The minute you cheat, it’s over. You’re out of that ketotic state and any result you had is absolutely gone.”

So…I guess the next cast party won’t be keto-themed?
