Ben & Jerry's Announces Plans To Make CBD-Infused Ice Cream

Ben & Jerry’s is getting into the CBD game—just as soon as cannabidiol is legal in all 50 states. In a press release Thursday, the ice cream company announced its “commitment to including CBD in its ice cream innovations.”

For now, an FDA regulation prevents CBD from being added to food and beverages. A public hearing will take place May 31 to discuss the full legalization of CBD in this category, for which Ben & Jerry’s has submitted comment.

“We’re doing this for our fans,” CEO Matthew McCarthy said in a statement. “We’ve listened and brought them everything from Non-Dairy indulgences to on-the-go portions with our Pint Slices. We aspire to love our fans more than they love us and we want to give them what they’re looking for in a fun, Ben & Jerry’s way.”

Between flavors like Half Baked and Magic Brownies and the company’s tendency to speak out on social and political issues, it would be more surprising if they didn’t join the conversation. Still, fans are split—some are all for it while others take umbrage with the company’s politics.

An Instagram posted four hours ago (at the time of this post) already had 31,000 likes and more than 2,000 comments. Here are a few opinions from Ben & Jerry’s followers:

If and when the ice cream can move forward, Ben & Jerry’s will use sustainably-sourced CBD from Vermont, where the company is based.
