Curd rice, here’s why every south Indian swears by this healthy meal

Almost every south Indian, unless they are lactose intolerant, will end their meal with a serving of curd rice. This obsession doesn’t make sense to the rest of the country, but there’s a good reason why every south Indian swears by it. Curd rice is the perfect end to any meal. It helps cool the stomach after a hot meal. As south India has hot climate throughout the year, curd rice helps bring down the body temperature.

Now we know that eating curd is beneficial to our body. But it is also the best medicine for an upset tummy. Ami Turakhia, dietician and founder, Diet Castle, says, “Curd rice is the best meal to eat for indigestion or diarrhoea because curd is a great source of probiotic. Consuming curd rice helps to restore healthy microbial balance which, in turn, helps in better digestion. Rice helps bulk up stools and relive diarrhoea as well.”

Here are some other benefits of curd rice:

Rich source of protein: Curd is a good source of protein. It is also a good antioxidant and has high contents of calcium.

Stomach pain: Rice is a good source of magnesium and potassium, which helps reduce stomach cramps and pain. “Curd rice is beneficial for premenstrual cramps as well,” says Turakhia.

Helps digestion: The reason it is often consumed at the end of the meal is because it helps digest the food better.

Improves immunity: The probiotics in curd helps improve immunity and makes the body capable of fighting diseases.

Mood enhancer: Curd can be a stress-buster and can lift your mood. According to studies, probiotic bacteria and good fats, both found in curd, can help reduce stress.
